A three-day long web-based training course on Aman rice production organized by BRRI was inaugurated on Sunday, 23 July 2006 at the auditorium of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) in Gazipur. Mr M K Anwar, Hon'ble Minister for Agriculture, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh inaugurated the training course as the chief guest while Dr M Mahiul Haque, BRRI Director General presided over the inaugurated the session.
Among others Md Ibrahim Khalil, Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), BRRI Director (Research) Dr M A Baqui and Dr Noel P Magor, IRRI Representative in Bangladesh and Manager, Food Security for Sustainable Household Livelihoods (FoSHoL) Project and Dr Musharraf Hossain, Chief Scientific Officer of BRRI and Focal Person for Bangladesh Rice Knowledge Bank (BRKB) at BRRI spoke on the occasion.
The development of the Aman Rice Production Training course was supported by the Food Security for Sustainable Household Livelihoods (FoSHoL), a project funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the International Rice Research Institute. The trainees are from the FoSHoL implementing NGO partners, ActionAid, CARE and Practical Action.
The dissemination of web-based rice production knowledge using the information super highway is a first in Bangladesh . The training module contains 210 fact sheets under 29 modules for boro and aman rice. In his speech the Hon'ble Minister highlighted the on-going development of agriculture training centres at the upazila level that will be connected to the internet.
The BRRI IT training should be used to train all extension workers at the upazila level and initially some 100 upazilas may be brought under this on-line network. The Minister expressed his satisfaction on the successes of research and efforts to communicate up-dated technology knowledge to farmers. The ambition is to have up to date agriculture knowledge available at the farmers' doorstep. |
